The
welcome that some (but not
all) schools offer to guests - a reception window,
a label or badge and a wait in a corridor - is very
similar
to the experience of visiting a prison. By making a
space that is social for visitors, with the familiar
cues and clues of a family kitchen, including easy seating
and newspapers, this New Zealand South Island school
has softened its welcome and increased parental engagement
and interest. Careful colour coding still differentiates
the school (red) from the "waiting" space
(blue). |
