MILLENNIUM PRIMARY SCHOOL, GREENWICH, LONDON
Sustainability is at the heart of this school's environmental design. Tempered air is passed through the hollow core of the pre-cast concrete floor slabs using the Thermodeck system to exploit the thermal storage capacity of the building fabric, enabling the building to moderate its own internal climate, so occupied areas receive 100% fresh air, with free night-time cooling. The boiler plant is a fraction of normal size due to high level insulation and efficient heat reclamation of both casual and solar heat gains. Advanced modelling techniques were employed to optimise daylighting levels in the classrooms through the use of light (and ventilation) wells at the rear. Presence-detecting, energy-efficient electric lighting has been used throughout.
