Current Projects in School
This started off separated into sections (ICT, New Media, Active Citizenship) but the lines are too blurred in all my projects, so below (in no particular order) are a selection of some of our current projects or initiatives. Feel free to email me to ask to take part with us....
A group of young people aged between 11-16 are currently attempting to get 100 schools to take part in this project! Essentially, the young people take a photograph of, and interview, 100 people from their local community aged 1 - 100 (so person 1 is aged 1, person 50 is aged 50 etc!). They ask them the same questions (where were you born? best memory? what you had for breakfast? etc) and post the interview up onto our website. We’ve been comparing cultural differences within the same country and others..... if you want to take part please email us!
This was an amazing project run by our local CLC (Feltham). It was designed to help students become more reflective about their learning, both the skills they use, the joy they experience and the different ways they learn in different places. The project was entered by 8 local secondary schools (they also ran a primary competition which had some amazing entries!) and we were the ones who won! What this means is that we are being supported (financially and in time) by the CLC to implement our design and actually make it happen! Its all happening over the summer holidays and we are really excited!!
Safe Haven project
This is a project that was run with Citizen Schools, who are a Citizenship association who promote schools working with their local press, local authority/council and other agencies.
1)Each of our tutor group classes worked together to agree on one thing they wanted to change in Hounslow. They all investigated how they might change it, who’s support they might need and what needed to happen for it to work. Each class chose representatives to present their ideas to the rest of the year and they all voted for the winners.
2)The safe haven project won; students worked with the local police to map out areas where lots of crime is committed, then plotted this onto google earth (using some fab satellite navigation devices) and overlayed it with a map of streetlights to see if there was any corrolation between street lighting and crime...
3)They ran a series of crime workshops to help other students keep safe (knife crime and self defence)
4)They created posters and worked with local businesses to create ‘safe havens’. The businesses have put signs up in their windows so young people know where the safe havens are. This means if the young people feel unsafe at any time, they can go into the shop and phone the police or a parent to collect them. We had over whelming support from local businesses for this and have made great links!
Lights out Hounslow
In the run up to Earth day, we work with other schools (primary and secondary), youth clubs, the local council and local businesses, to ensure we all use as little as possible, turning out lights when leaving the room, turning off the tap when cleaning teeth etc... Its great and builds good relationships in our local community
We work with YPI every year to have every young person in Y10 (14-15yrs old) to investigate, raise awareness for and work with a local charity. We’ve worked with over 45 different local charities over 3 years - its a great experience for our young people... eve better, they often continue to work with their charity far beyond the project!
