Main finding: individual identities matter, bandwidth needs to be symmetrical.

Schools OnLine (1995 - 1997)

Description: Children aged 7 to 18 and their teachers in 69 schools connected to curriculum experts
Main finding: learning can take place in an online context. The need for participation, not simply interaction was established


Tesco SchoolNet 2000 (1998 - 2000)

Description: Children of all ages in 12,300 schools in the UK
Main finding: a sense of audience for work is essential. A feeling of community can develop among large numbers (139,000 children)

Main finding: there is a wide need for online learning communities throughout all populations

Main finding: We increased our insight into the barriers and benefits for adults participating in online learning communities, and discovered that we need to support professionals to be self-directed.

Main finding: confirmed the need for sensitive and intensive facilitation and that good interfaces are complex to build for a global community.

Description: to extend the principles established in NetSprite into all areas of the Health Service in Essex
Main finding: participants need to explicitly learn the skills of collaboration and self directed learning

Talking Heads (2000 - 2002)

Description: Talking Heads is a pilot project for the Virtual College of School Leadership, researching how best to generate online communities of practise for new heads of schools.
Main finding: Experts and policy makers in the Hotseat are learning from the front line by engaging in frank discussions with experienced practitioners on crucial educational issues. We will also learn how to extend and sustain the welcoming and personalised character of the communities and to optimise the effectiveness of the extensive knowledge base being generated by the participants.
