Modals
Sollen, dürfen, können, mögen and müssen are so-called Modal Verbs, as they help you use other verbs in a different mode. Here they are below with some English equivalents in the Present and Past Indicative Tenses and in the Past Conditional/Past Subjunctive, followed by some examples of use:
Note: Pronunciation
- s at the beginning of a word sounds like z in German, and w is pronounced: v.
- German ch is pronounced at the back of the throat - a similar sound to the ch in Scottish 'Loch Lomond'.
- How to pronounce: 'ä', 'ö' and 'ü'? Here is a rough and ready guide: shape your mouth in the way you would normally try to say 'a', 'o' and 'u', but try to say: 'ee' instead!

Examples of use
Modals appear together with the Infinitive of the main verb. Consider the examples below and collect some more of your own:

Note:
Would and würde are used in indirect speech:
Your colleague said we wouldn't get any tickets for the evening performance Sie meinte, wir würden für die Abendvorstellung keine Plätze mehr kriegen Verbs of motion can be implied after a Modal Verb in German:
I'm to go to Finland tomorrow with Herr Krüger! 
Morgen soll ich mit Herrn Krüger nach Finnland!
Modal + Past Participle
Both languages use Modal Verbs + Infinitive or Past Participle to form Conditionals
