Grammar Notes - Negatives |
Good news!
In German it's not so difficult to form negatives - in the main you just use nicht!
Where do you position nicht? Look at the examples and consider the function of nicht in each. See if you can detect a 'rule of thumb'. This is not easy, so we've provided an alternative function of nicht where the utterance still permits.

- Relating to a word: as you might expect, nicht usually goes in front of the word it is negating.
- In a position of emphasis: Nicht may occupy one of the main places of emphasis in a clause: at the beginning or the end.

However ...
Using not or nicht is not always the only (or even the right) way to form a negative.
You'll have noticed above that English sometimes used 'no' instead of 'not'. German also uses this kind of negative. There are other ways of expressing a negative, too.
The economy is hardly controlled Die Wirtschaft wird kaum geregelt There's no end to it, seemingly! Es nimmt scheinbar kein Ende! It doesn't matter! Macht nichts! No thank you Danke Unfortunately that's not a mistake Das ist leider kein Irrtum Don't mention it! Nichts zu danken! I have no time Ich habe keine Zeit I have neither time nor money Ich habe weder Zeit noch Geld

Bisher hatte keiner Zeit, mir das zu erklären They're both unhealthy! Sind beide ungesund! Does nobody have a solution? Weiß keiner eine Lösung?
A whole lot is going on! Take another look:
The economy is hardly (= not much) controlled Die Wirtschaft wird kaum (= nicht viel) geregelt There's no (=not an) end to it, seemingly! Es nimmt scheinbar kein (= nicht ein - DON'T USE) Ende! It doesn't matter! (= It matters nothing) (Es) macht nichts!
