The town has an
outdoor swimming pool, a sports centre, a boating lake,
together with a sandy beach alongside a paddling pool and
other safe amenities for children. There are a wide
selection of small shops and eating places in
Brightlingsea.
The Tendring
Peninsula has miles of sandy beach areas (Clacton and
Frinton), historical buildings (Colchester and Lavenham) and
the surrounding countryside is pleasant and includes some
fine walks, including a 5 mile walk from Brightlingsea
alongside the River Colne.

Brightlingsea,
a maritime heritage town which is rich in character
and history, has been inhabited since earliest
times. Saxons, Danes and Normans have all lived
here.
In 1900
several bronze age burial sites were discovered
near the town.

In the
past the main occupations in Brightlingsea have
been connected with the sea, principally fishing
and shipbuilding. The Museum houses a collection of
exhibits from the town's past including its
maritime connections and oyster industry as well as
its Cinque Port membership (Brightlingsea is the
only Cinque Port outside Kent and
Sussex).

The sea
is still important for the town offering a safe
yachting haven and is the home of international and
national sailing championships
Fishing
smacks and barges are housed in a specially
designed dock. The annual "Smack and Barge Race"
attracts entries from all around the area.
