The town has an outdoor swimming pool, a sports centre, a boating lake, together with a sandy beach alongside a paddling pool and other safe amenities for children. There are a wide selection of small shops and eating places in Brightlingsea.

The Tendring Peninsula has miles of sandy beach areas (Clacton and Frinton), historical buildings (Colchester and Lavenham) and the surrounding countryside is pleasant and includes some fine walks, including a 5 mile walk from Brightlingsea alongside the River Colne.

Brightlingsea, a maritime heritage town which is rich in character and history, has been inhabited since earliest times. Saxons, Danes and Normans have all lived here.

In 1900 several bronze age burial sites were discovered near the town.

In the past the main occupations in Brightlingsea have been connected with the sea, principally fishing and shipbuilding. The Museum houses a collection of exhibits from the town's past including its maritime connections and oyster industry as well as its Cinque Port membership (Brightlingsea is the only Cinque Port outside Kent and Sussex).

The sea is still important for the town offering a safe yachting haven and is the home of international and national sailing championships

Fishing smacks and barges are housed in a specially designed dock. The annual "Smack and Barge Race" attracts entries from all around the area.
