Learning in the New Millennium

Phase One

This long term collaborative project between Nortel and Ultralab explores Information Communication Technology in learning.

The project is designed to expand pupils' understanding of the importance of science and technology in their everyday lives, to develop and explore multimedia and on-line tools through which pupils can learn and develop their own multiple media communication skills.

The project explores key concepts that are core business for Nortel and at the same time informs national and institutional policy.

In 1997 an engineer taking part in Phase 1 commented....

"I have found the experiment very interesting and have enjoyed participating.....the interactions in which we have had a part have been rewarding and the unrestrained approach of the pupils has been fun to watch. It is certainly interesting to see that the availability of a new mechanism for interaction with others, and a new area for skills development and demonstration, has revealed unobserved strengths in some individuals. It is also encouraging that a growth in self-confidence from ability in this area has improved social and personal interaction generally. ... I think it is quite significant that this technology can perhaps be seen to provide a stepping stone for the honing of interpersonal skills in a "safe" environment in which the individual feels in control of the communication and can withdraw or regulate this to a comfortable level, and can then develop the confidence to move beyond this limited window to fuller contact without concern...."
