Categorise phrases
Brief
- what to do, step by step.

This task encourages you to consider phrases and how they are working - to help you understand a range of meanings and use of language - useful if you want to gain LCCIEB credit.

Try this exercise on the train - or anywhere while you are waiting.

Each phrase corresponds to at least ONE of the following LCCIEB categories:

  • Content, eg: personal biographical details, company premises;
  • Concept, eg: expressing space, time, number and quantity;
  • Function, eg: expressing gratitude, pleasure, surprise Structure, eg: adjectives, verbs.
  1. Print the Phrase book in which the categories are listed and all phrases categorised.
  2. Print the Scripts if necessary.
  3. Fold the Scripts vertically along the columns.
  4. Hide the Category column and decide which category each key phrase belongs to.

To check your answers, unfold the Category column.

Many phrases fit several categories, so be prepared for your answers to be different.

Browse through the Phrase book to find other phrases with the same categories you have identified - say them out loud if possible.

This is a demanding activity, so well done if you've persevered!

When you feel ready, why not study the structure of the phrases, using the Grammar notes.Then you could go on to try the Translation practice task or Use it for real!.
