Brief - what to do, step by step.

This is a listening and speaking course, but in order to consolidate your understanding, you might find it useful to create an English version of the script, then (much harder) work back again from the English!

You could try this exercise on the train or anywhere while you are waiting.

1. Print the Glossary, Phrase book, Grammar notes, Pronunciation Guide and Scripts if necessary.
2. Fold the Scripts vertically into columns.
3. As preparation, read through the Scripts a few times (ideally listening as you read - to benefit from the intonation).
4. Highlight any words which look like English ones. Need help with this? Consult the Pronunciation Guide or Glossary.
5. Write an English version.
6. Now reverse the process and translate from English. Consult the Clues if you need help. Consult the Grammar notes as well.

Debrief - how have you done and what next?

To achieve naturalness in translation, you need to express some things in a completely different way. For example in English you might use only one sentence where the script uses two. To verify, unfold the English column.

Don't forget, that unless you've worked entirely from memory, your own version is likely to be different to the one we've suggested!

If you think you've got something wrong, highlight the doubtful area and refer to the Glossary, Phrase book or Grammar notes. Use any other reference works you might have available.

If you're still puzzled, leave it for a day or so, then check again.
